Zambia, a landlocked country in south-central Africa, is a vast, kidney-shaped plateau most of which drains gently downward to the great Zambezi River.
Although well within the tropics, it is a temperate land since it has relatively high altitude. It is generally flat, and is bordered by eight other countries.
Zambia became the Independent Republic of Zambia in 1964 and was a one-party state for many years before the first multi-party elections were held in 1990.
Its eight million people are mostly of Bantu origin, belonging to a large number of tribes and speaking 73 different dialects, but Zambia’s official language is English.
The economy is based on Zambia’s copper, the mining of which is the largest provider of formal employment and biggest earner of foreign exchange.
